PGMA’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2008

July 28, 2008, another historic event for the Pilipino people as President Gloria Arroyo delivers her 8th State of the Nation Address (SONA). Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the President will center on subsidies, electricity, food production and infrastructure, specifically “to what extent these have been achieved.”

 The President’s Ten-Point Agenda are as follows:

1. The creation of six million jobs in six years via more opportunities given to entrepreneurs, tripling of the amount of loans for lending to small and medium enterprises, and the development of one to two million hectares of land for agricultural business;

2. The construction of new buildings, classrooms, provision of desks and chairs and books for students and scholarships to poor families;

3. The balancing of the budget;

4. The “decentralization” of progress around the nation through the use of transportation networks like the roll-on, roll-off and the digital infrastructure;

5. The provision of electricity and water supply to barangays nationwide;

6. The decongestion of Metro Manila by forming new cores of government and housing centers in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao;

7. The development of Clark and Subic as the best international service and logistic centers in the region;

8. The automation of the electoral process;

9. A just end to the peace process; and

10. A fair closure to the divisiveness among the Edsa 1, 2 and 3 forces.

I have also included the highlights of PGMA’s past SONAs

2001 ‘Bangkang Papel’ (Paper Boats)
2002 Strong Republic
My working agenda for the coming year will focus on creating and improving job opportunities. Citizens with rewarding jobs paying decent wages constitute not just a stone in the edifice but the very foundation of a ‘Strong Republic.’

 2003 Post Oakwood Mutiny
“Just as I will do everything to make sure that the future will be kind to Mikaela (granddaughter) and her generation, so must we all strive to turn our fears into a resolve to do right not just by ourselves, but by our children and grandchildren.”

2004 ‘Mamamayan Muna’/ Release of truck driver Angelo dela Cruz in Iraq

2005 Two Republics / Post ‘Hello Garci’ controversy

“Ours is a country divided; the story of our nation is a tale of two Philippines; almost, as it were, two countries under the same name.
One is the Philippines whose economy, after long years of cumulative national endeavor, is now poised for take off. The other is the Philippines whose political system, after equally long years of degeneration, has become a hindrance to progress.

2006 Strong Republic/ Post Lebanon crisis
“For those who want to pick up old fights, we’re game but what a waste of time. Why not join hands instead? Join hands in the biggest challenge of all, where we all win or we all lose: the battle for the survival and progress of our one and only country.”
2007 Post Elections
“They say the campaign for the next election started on May 15, the day after the last. Fine.
I stand in the way of no one’s ambition. I only ask that no one stand in the way of the people’s well being and the nation’s progress.”

    All I can say is that the this year’s SONA was just a “make believe”…

    ….

    pwede ba….
    Lahat ng taong NAGREREKLAMO about what Mrs. President says….

    You can’t judge one people just by what it promises to her people….

    But if you are clever, you will see that what OUR PRESIDENT did is thankful to the people that don’t have jobs..

    And IT’S OK for me if you have VIOLENT REACTIONS, SAMA NG LOOB and REPLY…

    REMINDER:

    I’m just a 14 years old girl with a simple life… NOT RICH and NOT POOR…

    I’m just telling my OPINION about what OUR PRESIDENT said….And also WHAT TAONG BAYAN says…

    I’m telling this information of mine to all of you for you to MIND and THINK about what you have said about SONA 2008…

    *I’m so sorry about the BAD WORDS that I have said…Nabubuisit lang talaga ako sa mga sinasabi ng mga TAONG BAYAN…..^_^
    and sana wag niyo kong awayin BATA pa ako….

    and she’s right!
